Aljezur is a municipality with a total area of 323.5 km² and a total population of 5,322 inhabitants, situated in the western coast of Algarve in a green and fertile valley, with its hilltop Moorish Castle offering nice views to the surrounding countryside.
Travelling from Aljezur you can find some of the most spectacular sea-side sceneries in the Algarve Region, provided by high cliffs sand surrounded by green mountains. Some of its best-known beaches are Amoreira, Monte Clerigo and Arrifana easily reached from the riverside village of Odeceixe, 18 km north of Aljezur on the N 120.. Aljezur is ideal for a relaxing holiday in the countryside, where you can enjoy walking, cycling or horseriding, or just sitting at a café reading a good book. The Coast line of this region, named Costa Vicentina, is inserted in a Natural Park, testimony of its importance and greatness. Aljezur is traditionally rural, well known for its sweet potato crops, and has Agriculture, Fishing and Tourism as the main economic activities. The region has also a rich and tasty cuisine, very typical and diversified.
In Aljezur you can find the biggest Wind Energy Park in the Algarve. Algarve Energy and Environment Agency – AREAL – has been working with Aljezur Municipality since the year 2000 towards Energy Efficiency aiming the implementation of local sustainable energy policies. The participation in the MEDEEA Project and the development of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) will certainly contribute to the recognition of Aljezur as a green municipality and to the definition of an energetic strategy which can lead to significant results.
