Coastal Integrated Governance for Sustainable Tourism

The Gozo Regional Committee presented the COASTING project (Coastal Integrated Governance for Sustainable Tourism) on the 12th July 2019 at Ministry for Gozo, Victoria.
COASTING (Coastal integrated governance for sustainable tourism) is an Interreg MED capitalisation project (EU co-funded) based on the ICZM principles application, aiming at enhancing the effectiveness of a multilevel governance tool such as the Coast Contract, fully framing coastal management and tourism sustainability issues.

Nowadays coastline has undergone an intense urbanization process caused by housing needs, industrial uses, tourist exploitation based, above all, on intensive use patterns. As result of this process, coastal zones, especially in the Mediterranean area, suffer from the unsustainable expansion of settlements and the exponential increase of touristic flows pressure.
In order to enhance the development of a sustainable and responsible coastal and maritime tourism in the MED area, COASTING supports the implementation and dissemination of an integrated coastal recovery and management tool based on a multilevel governance model (Coast Contract or Contrat de Baie).

COASTING brings together 9 Partners from 7 countries:
• Andalusian Federation of Towns and Provinces (LEAD PARTNER) (ES)
• Lazio Region – Regional Directorate for housing policies and territorial, landscape and urban planning (IT)
• Gozo Regional Committee (MT)
• Sapienza University of Rome – PDTA Department (IT)
• Aix Marseille Provence Metropolis (FR)
• Dubrovnik Neretva Regional Development Agency DUNEA (HR)
• Region of Epirus – Regional Unit of Thesprotia (EL)
• Municipality of Saranda (AL)
• Sicilian Region – Department of Cultural Heritage and of Sicilian Identity (IT)

During the event, GRC illustrated the project in terms of strategies, objectives, pilot areas in Gozo and expected results.

In order to involve key stakeholders and local actors in the drafting of a strategy for the Coast Contract of Gozo, GRC will organize 3 technical workshops in the period of July and September 2019.
